Engaging All Students - The Role of Technology in Personalized Learning

"The most important thing that schools can do is not use technology more; but use it more effectively."

John G. Palfrey and Urs Gasser

iN REGARDS TO MY CHOSEN cstp AND SELF-reflected INQUIRy, WHAT WOULD i LIKE MY REALITY TO BE?

I would like to incorporate more technology to the class itself rather than just the required assignments for my students. I think that I can lose some engagement as we are moving through our slides and if I can sue some different tech that the students can explore, I can elevate the engagement during class time.

HOW CAN i CLOSE THE GAP BETWEEN WHERE i AM AND WHERE i WANT TO BE?

After observing another teacher using different applications in their algebra class, I have been researching subject specific applications to incorporate into my lessons.

What I have so far: my school generously provides adobe creative-cloud to each student for my digital art class, which includes apps such as photoshop,  illustrator, indesign, and lightroom. I have also used the procreate and notability apps to help illustrate my instructions on sketching and drawing.  Other apps I have discovered are Grid, PipCamera, Handy Art Reference Tool, Essential Skeleton, and the Google Arts and Culture website, which we have used already in a previous project.

To measure engagement, I will be testing these out in class and looking for more of the voices I don't hear from as regularly. I have been fortunate to see that some voices, that are not heard as generously as others, have come forward. I view this as a success!

I will know this is an effective practice if I keep the engagement high as we move forward with these new tools.

What actions will you take to promote success for your historically underserved students?

Our school is dedicated to educating and reaching students no matter their race, social or economic standing, to reach their educational, social and personal needs. I have students who are homeless, students who are in transitional places in their lives and I keep this in mind as I decide what technology can be and is used in the classroom. Fortunately, because our school is virtual, we provide laptops and fund to help them get the materials they need for the class. This includes applications like adobe creative cloud, the physical materials needed for art projects and the apps I ask them to use on their chosen devices. It is integral to a universally designed classroom that I create a curriculum and material that can reach and hear all of my students.
